“Storms make oak take deeper root.”
-George Herbert
When storms come, I am ready. Severe weather can include flooding, thunderstorms, and even tornadoes in the places I have lived. Severe weather can also include extreme heat and arctic cold temperatures. I keep the basics ready in my house for all kinds of severe weather: battery-operated lanterns, flashlights, and fans are a must. I also have a travel kennel for my little dog if we should have to shelter during a tornado. I am ready for a storm.
Am I also ready for the storms of life? These storms take a different kind of preparation. I have been through some very tough times during my sobriety and I have had to be just as ready for these storms. Being rooted in my program of recovery was the important preparation. Every meeting I went to, every phone call I made, every step I took with my sponsor, every day and night that I prayed kept me ready when the storm finally struck.
Just as important, my commitment to the Twelfth Step also readied me for the storms of life. Being available and then committed to sponsorship also prepares me for stormy weather. Spending time with my sponsees at meetings and taking the time to really listen to them and hear their stories are key. Taking them through the steps will enable these women to bear the storms that are coming for them as well.
Today’s Prayer
God, help me realize today that the Twelfth Step is a step in my recovery. Higher Power, give me someone to sponsor so I can share my recovery with her.
